Cooling System Upgrades for High-Performance Engines: Radiators, Intercoolers, and Oil Coolers

Power creates heat. Every modification that adds power also adds thermal load - and if your cooling system isn't keeping up, you're fighting a losing battle against reliability. BYE Performance regularly sees vehicles arrive in good mechanical condition but thermally compromised, limiting how hard they can be driven before temperatures climb into dangerous territory. Here's how to address it.
Radiator Upgrades: More Core, More Cooling
The factory radiator on most performance vehicles is sized for the stock engine's heat output with margins for normal driving conditions. Once you start adding power - through a cam, a supercharger, a tune, or a combination - the heat load increases and the stock radiator's margin disappears.
An aftermarket performance radiator with a larger or thicker core increases the surface area for heat exchange, allowing more heat to be rejected per unit of time. For LS-powered vehicles, aluminium three-row and four-row cores are available in the Aeroflow and PWR ranges - both carried at BYE Performance. Switching from a stock plastic-tank radiator to an all-aluminium performance unit is one of the most effective longevity investments for a modified engine.
Intercoolers: Keeping Boost Cold
On turbocharged and supercharged engines, the intercooler (charge air cooler) removes heat from the compressed intake charge before it enters the engine. Cooler charge air is denser and less prone to detonation, which means the tune can run more timing and fuel to extract more power safely.
Stock intercoolers are often undersized for higher boost levels or sustained hard driving. An upgraded front-mount intercooler (FMIC) or top-mount intercooler (TMIC) with larger core dimensions increases cooling capacity substantially. On supercharged LS applications, Harrop's integrated twin-pass intercooler within the manifold is already a performance solution - but for air-to-air turbo applications, an Aeroflow or custom-built front-mount is the standard upgrade path.
Oil Coolers: Protecting Your Engine's Lifeline
Engine oil doesn't just lubricate - it also carries heat away from bearing surfaces and critical components. Under hard use, sustained high RPM, or track conditions, oil temperature climbs well beyond normal operating ranges, reducing viscosity and accelerating wear. An external oil cooler - typically an air-to-oil unit mounted in the front of the vehicle - maintains oil temperature within safe limits regardless of how hard the engine is working.

Properly plumbed, an oil cooler is invisible in normal driving and becomes critical insurance on the track or dyno.
Coolant Choices: Not All Coolants Are Equal
For high-performance applications, coolant selection matters. Never mix coolant types - flush completely before changing formulations.
