What a Dyno Actually Measures
A dynamometer (dyno) measures the power and torque your engine delivers to the driven wheels - called wheel horsepower (rwhp) and wheel torque. It does this by applying a controlled load to the vehicle while it accelerates through its RPM range, measuring the resistance it overcomes.
At BYE, we use a hub dyno - meaning the vehicle connects directly to the dyno via the wheel hubs, rather than sitting on rollers. Hub dynos are more accurate, eliminate tyre slip and rolling resistance from the measurement, and are safer for the vehicle during repeated high-power pulls.
What a 'Custom Tune' Actually Means
A flash tune applies a pre-written map to your ECU based on your car's theoretical configuration. It's a guess - a good one, but a guess. A custom tune is a live calibration process where a skilled tuner adjusts the engine's fuel, ignition timing, boost pressure (on forced induction vehicles), cam timing (on variable cam timing platforms), and other parameters in real time, based on what the engine is actually doing on the dyno.
This means the tune is specific to your car, your parts, your fuel, and your conditions. It can't be replicated by a generic file, and it can't be done correctly without actually running the car under load. At BYE, we do no flash tuning - everything is custom to your vehicle.
What Happens During a BYE Tune
When your car arrives, we begin with a health check - checking for faults, verifying components, and ensuring the car is mechanically sound before we touch the tune. A tune on a car with an underlying mechanical issue can mask the problem until it becomes catastrophic.
We then establish baseline power figures to measure the before-and-after. From there, the tuner works through the fuel and ignition maps, making measured adjustments and verifying results with each pull. On boosted vehicles, we also dial in boost control, wastegate duty, and safety limits. The process can take several hours depending on the vehicle's complexity.
When we're done, you leave with accurate before-and-after dyno graphs and a car that's running at its full potential, safely.
Who Should Get a Tune?
Anyone who has modified their car beyond bolt-on cosmetics. An exhaust system, a cold air intake, and a tune together will out-perform any single modification done in isolation. A cam upgrade without a tune is an incomplete job. A supercharger without a tune is asking for trouble.
