Making power is only half the equation. Getting that power to the road without breaking the drivetrain - or spinning tyres uselessly - is the other half. For any build pushing beyond stock power levels, the differential and gearbox are critical points of attention that are frequently overlooked until something fails.
Why the Factory Diff Is a Weak Point on High-Power Builds
The open differential fitted to most standard vehicles is designed for everyday road use. Under hard acceleration, it sends torque to the wheel with the least resistance - typically the one that's losing traction. On a performance vehicle, this is exactly the wrong outcome. Add significant power to an open diff and you'll either spin one wheel uselessly or, eventually, break the unit entirely.
Limited Slip Differentials: The Essential Upgrade
A limited slip differential (LSD) distributes torque more evenly between the driven wheels, maintaining traction under hard acceleration. There are several LSD types suited to different applications:
• Torsen/Helical LSDs (such as the Torsen or Truetrac unit) - Gear-based, smooth operation, no clutch packs to wear out, ideal for street and road use. Popular in LS Commodore and Mustang applications.
• Clutch-pack LSDs - More aggressive lock-up under power, favoured in motorsport. Require periodic maintenance and rebuild. Common in RWD performance and drift applications.
• Mechanical locker - Full lock under acceleration, open on deceleration. Drag racing and off-road applications. Not suitable for street use due to tyre wear and handling characteristics.

Gearbox Considerations for High-Power Builds
The gearbox takes the brunt of every power application, every gear change, and every launch. Factory automatic transmissions in particular are calibrated for factory torque levels - add 30–40% more torque and the failure risk climbs significantly. Common failure points include clutch packs, bands, and the torque converter.
For automatic transmission vehicles, upgraded transmission servicing (with a quality fluid such as Penrite's ATF range), a shift kit, and upgraded converter stall speed are often the first steps. For serious power builds, a full transmission rebuild with upgraded internals or a replacement performance-spec unit may be required. Driveshafts: The Often-Missed Link
Between the gearbox and the diff sits the driveshaft - a component that rarely gets attention until it fails catastrophically. At high power levels and on vehicles used for drag racing or hard street use, factory driveshafts can twist, crack, or delaminate (on composite factory units). A quality steel or aluminium custom driveshaft, properly balanced and rated for your power level, is the correct long-term solution.
