How to Prepare Your Car for a Dyno Tune

A dyno tune is most productive when the vehicle arrives mechanically sound and the tuner has clear information about the modifications. Preparation helps reduce delays, protects the engine and makes the results easier to understand.

Make sure the car is mechanically healthy
A dyno is not a substitute for basic mechanical diagnosis. Before the appointment, address warning lights, misfires, coolant leaks, oil leaks, charging problems and unusual noises. Check that the battery is healthy and that the vehicle starts and idles consistently.

Inspect belts, hoses, clamps, wiring and vacuum lines. Confirm that the throttle operates correctly and that the brakes and tyres are suitable for controlled dyno operation.

Bring the right information
Provide a clear list of modifications, including engine internals, injectors, fuel pumps, intake, exhaust, camshaft, forced-induction hardware and previous ECU work. If possible, bring previous dyno sheets, tune files and diagnostic information.

Tell the tuner how the vehicle is used. A street car, towing vehicle and competition car may require different priorities for drivability, response, temperature control and power delivery.

Check fuel and fluids
Arrive with enough of the intended fuel for the session. If the vehicle is designed for a particular ethanol blend or race fuel, communicate that before testing. Fuel consistency matters when comparing results.

Check engine oil, coolant, power-steering fluid and transmission fluid. The vehicle should not be presented with a fluid level issue that could interrupt testing.

Understand the tuning process
A proper session may involve health checks, baseline runs, sensor verification, calibration changes, controlled testing and data review. The final result should be assessed across the operating range - not just by the highest peak power figure.

Ask what information will be recorded and whether the tune includes any relevant safety strategies. A good calibration should aim for useful, repeatable performance.

BYE Performance recommends treating a dyno appointment as part of the vehicle’s development process. Good preparation allows more time to be spent on tuning and less time chasing avoidable problems.
