Cast vs. Hypereutectic vs. Forged: What's the Right Choice?

Stock pistons in most production LS engines are cast aluminium - adequate for factory power levels but with limited tolerance for increased cylinder pressure, heat, and detonation. Hypereutectic pistons (a harder aluminium alloy) offer improved heat tolerance over standard cast units and are a good choice for naturally aspirated builds with mild cam and exhaust upgrades.

Forged pistons are the correct choice for any boosted application. The forging process produces a denser, more homogeneous aluminium structure that resists cracking under high-stress detonation events. On a turbocharged or supercharged engine, running forged pistons isn't a luxury - it's the minimum standard for a build you can trust.

Compression Ratio and Boost

Piston choice determines compression ratio, which is one of the most important variables in a boosted engine. Higher compression means more efficient combustion - but on a boosted engine, too high a compression ratio creates detonation that destroys pistons and bearings. The right compression ratio for a boosted LS depends on the boost level, fuel type (pump petrol vs. E85), and how aggressively you want to tune.
