Penrite Oils: Why the Right Oil Matters More Than You Think
Share
Oil is the single most unglamorous part of a performance build - and the one most likely to cost you an engine if you get it wrong. At BYE Performance, we stock Penrite Oils across a range of viscosities and formulations because we've seen firsthand what happens when an engine runs the wrong oil under hard use.
Why Penrite?
Penrite is an Australian company that's been manufacturing oils and lubricants locally since 1926. Unlike many international brands that import and rebadge generic formulations, Penrite develops products specifically for Australian conditions - our temperature ranges, our fuel quality, and the demands of engines used in competition and hard driving.
For performance applications, their HPR (High Performance Racing) range is formulated with high zinc and phosphorus content (ZDDP) - additives that are critical for protecting flat-tappet camshafts and highly loaded valve trains. Many modern passenger car oils have had these additives reduced for emissions compliance, which makes them unsuitable for performance engines.
Choosing the Right Viscosity
Viscosity selection matters. Run too thin an oil in a worn or high-compression engine and you'll lose oil pressure at operating temperature. Run too thick and you'll sacrifice cold-start protection and pumping efficiency. For most naturally aspirated LS-family engines in Perth's climate, a 10W-40 or 10W-50 HPR oil is a safe starting point. Boosted and high-rev builds may benefit from a 15W-50 or dedicated racing formulation.
If you've recently had your car tuned or rebuilt at BYE, ask us what we ran on the dyno - we'll tell you exactly what viscosity and spec we used and why.
Oil Change Intervals for Performance Engines
Factory oil change intervals are set for standard driving patterns. If your car sees dyno time, track days, drag events, or long periods of hard acceleration, you should be changing oil more frequently - and always after a dyno session or event. Heat cycles break down oil faster than simple kilometres, and a fresh oil change before a big event is cheap insurance.
We also recommend a quality oil filter - don't undo a premium oil choice with a filter that can't handle the flow rates or temperatures of a performance engine.
