Powerbond Performance Balancers and Pulleys: The Overlooked Upgrade That Protects Your Engine

When building a performance LS engine, certain upgrades get all the attention - cams, heads, superchargers. But there's one part that sits quietly at the front of the engine doing critical work and rarely gets discussed: the harmonic balancer. If yours fails at high RPM, the consequences can be catastrophic. Powerbond's performance balancers and pulleys, now available at BYE Performance, are the right solution for any serious build.

What Does a Harmonic Balancer Do?

The harmonic balancer (also called a crankshaft damper) is bolted to the front of the crankshaft. Its job is to absorb and dampen torsional vibration - the twisting forces that occur as each cylinder fires. Without a functioning balancer, these vibrations accumulate and can crack or break the crankshaft, damage bearings, and destroy accessory drives.

Factory balancers are built to handle stock power levels and RPM ranges. When you increase power, add forced induction, or extend the rev range, the factory unit is being asked to do more than it was designed for. Powerbond's performance units are engineered for exactly these conditions.

Powerbond's SFI-Rated Balancers

Powerbond manufactures SFI-rated harmonic balancers - meaning they've been independently tested and certified to meet the Safety Foundation Industries standard for crankshaft dampers. For any car running at a sanctioned drag event or track, an SFI balancer is mandatory. But even for street use, SFI certification is a useful indicator of quality and containment - if the unit ever fails, it fails safely rather than throwing metal through your engine bay.

For LS-powered vehicles specifically, Powerbond offers replacement balancers matched to LS1, LS2, LS3, LSA, and other variants. They also offer overdrive supercharger pulleys - a critical component if you're running a Harrop or Whipple blower and want to increase boost by changing the drive ratio.

Overdrive Pulleys for Supercharged LS Applications

If you're running a positive-displacement supercharger on your LS, the blower's output is directly tied to crank speed via the pulley ratio. By fitting a smaller blower pulley or a larger crank pulley (an 'overdrive' setup), you spin the supercharger faster relative to the engine, generating more boost without any other changes.

Powerbond's overdrive crank pulleys for LSA-powered HSVs (Clubsport R8, GTS, and GTSR) are a popular and cost-effective way to increase boost - often used alongside a BYE Performance tune to safely extract the extra power the increased boost delivers. We stock a range of overdrive percentages from 5% through to 28%, each unlocking progressively more boost.
