But the choice between a turbocharger and a supercharger is one that many enthusiasts get wrong - often because they're choosing based on the coolest-looking engine bay photos rather than the application. How a Turbocharger Works

A turbocharger is an exhaust-driven compressor. Hot exhaust gases spin a turbine wheel, which is connected via a shared shaft to a compressor wheel on the intake side. The compressor draws in ambient air, compresses it, and forces it into the engine at above-atmospheric pressure. The key characteristic: the energy comes from exhaust gas that would otherwise be wasted.

The cost of this "free" energy is turbo lag - the time between applying throttle and the turbocharger building sufficient boost to produce meaningful power. Modern turbo technology (twin-scroll turbines, variable geometry, small-frame turbos) has reduced this significantly, but it remains a characteristic of the technology.

How a Supercharger Works

A positive-displacement supercharger is mechanically driven from the crankshaft - typically via a belt and pulley system. It compresses air and forces it into the engine in direct proportion to engine RPM. The result is boost that is available immediately from idle, with linear, predictable power delivery. There is no lag.

The cost is mechanical parasitic drag - the supercharger consumes engine power to drive itself, typically 40–80kW depending on the unit size and boost level. This is recovered many times over by the power the boost produces, but it means the supercharger isn't "free energy" the way a turbocharger's exhaust-driven power is.
